Pearl Gatehouse

Pearl discovered oil painting in her teens. She has studied at The Slade School of Art UCL, also Worcester and Malvern Colleges of Art. In a varied career she has worked as teacher, art librarian and ceramic painter. Her work has been exhibited widely including in the Mall Galleries, selected by the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

Originally from the Isle of Wight and qualified as an offshore yachtmaster, the sea and coast feature strongly in Pearl’s body of work which is primarily semi-abstract. Her move to Dorset and becoming a member of the Bournemouth Art Club in 2013 inspired a new creative era.

Following an initial intuitive and emotional reaction, Pearl seeks to understand both the construction of her chosen subject and the total sensory environment. She uses the thickness of oil paint to suggest a textural equivalent to form, and colour graduations to emphasise rhythms and movement. Her contemporary style of painting captures a moment of inspiration and energy with flowing brushstrokes and expressive mark-marking. Pearl aims for each painting to provide a rich, visual experience while retaining a sense of mystery which may invite further thoughts and discoveries.
