Mary Carroll Shovelle

Mary Carroll Shovelle is a London and Dorset based artist specialising in water colour and mixed media. Her interests range from complex compositions imbued with colour and narrative to large drawn portraits in charcoal and chalk. Although classically trained Mary is experimental and her work ranges from drawing and painting to neon sculptures and printmaking.

Mary was trained at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, Chelsea (Painting and Printmaking Diploma) with continuing studies at the Royal Academy London (Drawing and Painting), Central St Martin (Photography), The Royal Drawing School, the V&A (iPad drawing) and RISD (Illustration in Storytelling) among others. Mary holds a Diploma in Media Studies (Distinction) from Birkbeck and a Diplome de Langue Francaise from the Alliance Francaise. Before retraining as an artist she was a Director of Marketing in the City of London. She has exhibited at Heatherleys, the V&A London, Holland Park, the RAC and with the Portobello Group of Artists.

In 2023 Mary set up her Dorset studio overlooking the sea between Hengistbury Point and the Purbeck Coast. She spends half the year travelling including to her native Ireland, and painting in Italy.
