Rita Brown

Rita has taught art in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dorset. Although her training has been in traditional drawing and painting skills, including trompe l’oeil, Rita has always been experimental in her approach. Her work is figurative and as well as abstract.

She starts from observation of a place, a situation, a feeling.  Whatever the subject she asks herself questions about mood, atmosphere and tension. Rita enjoys being challenged to interpret an idea in a new way whether through use of line, mark, colour, mixed media, texture or tone. Her abstract work is often intuitive and inspired her memories and personal experiences. She would describe herself as a painter/surface designer.

As well as painting Rita’s current and ongoing work is with experimental batik and mixed media on Japanese hand made papers. Each piece of work is unique and totally unrepeatable due to the unpredictable outcomes of using hot wax, dyes and discharge methods on different papers made from organic materials. The reaction of the paper to her working practice plays an integral part often creating interesting textures. Meditation also plays an important role in her practice.

Rita has exhibited nationally and internationally.
