John BrittonJohn’s present day work is directed towards what he thinks of as meaningful abstraction. Although he uses all forms of media on a variety of subjects, it appears that he has a recognisable style and is known for a distinctive use of colour. John’s main, though greatly differing influences, are Howard Hodgkin, Ben Nicholson and J M W Turner. Much of his work is based on a detailed knowledge acquired since the 1960s of the Isle of Purbeck, its coastline, landscape and the human impact on both. John’s main representational work relates to periods of time spent in Venice and is mostly based on challenging yet evocative night time paintings of that magical place. |

Three years of training under the umbrella of the Bournemouth Arts Institute and the guidance of various Dorset artists, in particular Brian Graham, Peter Joyce and Robert Woolner, has greatly helped his development as an artist. |
